MONTEGO BAY · JAMAICA
Warm sea, cool rivers, reggae in the hills.
Catamaran cruises on the reef, bamboo rafts on the Martha Brae, the climb up Dunn’s River Falls and the glow of the Luminous Lagoon. Negril sunsets, Rose Hall and Bob Marley country, all an easy run from the bay.
Only here
Three days that could only be Jamaica.
Beaches and boat trips turn up all over the Caribbean. Swimming in water that glows, standing where reggae was born, and climbing a waterfall straight out of the sea belong to this island alone.
Water that glows
The Luminous Lagoon
Where the Martha Brae meets the sea at Falmouth, the water lights up an electric blue wherever it is disturbed. Trail a hand over the side, or slip in for a swim, and you come up glowing. It is one of only a handful of bioluminescent lagoons left on earth, and the brightest of them all.

Where reggae was born
Bob Marley’s Nine Mile
Up in the St Ann hills sits the village where Bob Marley was born and laid to rest. The little house, the rock he rested his head on, the red, gold and green on every wall. For anyone who grew up on the music, standing here is reason enough to come to Jamaica.

Climb the water
Dunn’s River Falls
Six hundred feet of cool mountain water steps straight down into the Caribbean at Ocho Rios, and you climb it. A human chain links hands up the terraces, through the pools and under the falls, from the sea all the way to the top. There is nothing else quite like it.

The classics
Montego Bay’s Most Popular Tours
Bamboo rafting, catamaran cruises, the waterfalls and the lagoon. The days that fill up first.
Where to begin
The experiences a Montego Bay trip is built around.
The bamboo rafts, the catamarans, the waterfalls, the run west to Negril and the night out on the glowing lagoon. The handful of days most trips are planned around, and the best way to do each.
Plan your days
How far do you want to roam?
Montego Bay is the base, and the best days fan out along the north coast. Three ways to think about it, by how far you are happy to drive.
On the river
An hour on the Martha Brae.
A bamboo raft, a long pole, and a captain who has run this river his whole life. You glide for an hour between walls of green, past kingfishers and overhanging limbs, with nothing to do but lie back and trail a hand in the water. The most peaceful hour in Jamaica, half an hour from the bay.

The great house and the White Witch.
Rose Hall is the grand Georgian plantation house above the coast road, and the legend of Annie Palmer, the murderous White Witch, has trailed it for two centuries. Tour the restored rooms and the gardens by day, or take the candle-lit walk through the grounds after dark.
Tour Rose Hall →The water
The colour of the Caribbean.
The sea off Montego Bay is the postcard kind: clear, calm and warm enough to stay in for hours. Doctor’s Cave Beach drew the first health tourists a century ago, and the reef is a protected marine park. The best days end on a catamaran with a rum punch in hand as the sun goes down.
Catamaran cruises & snorkelling →Rivers and falls
The falls beyond the famous one.
Past the resorts the land climbs fast into rivers and waterfalls. The Blue Hole and Secret Falls hide up a back road near Ocho Rios, a string of jade pools you jump, slide and swim through with a guide. Quieter than Dunn’s River, and the one people talk about after.

Off the road
Mud, jungle and a Rasta welcome.
The hills behind Montego Bay are built for it: red-dirt trails, river crossings and lookouts over the coast. The best runs end in a Rastafari community for fruit, reasoning and a cup of something herbal. Loud, muddy, and the most fun you can have on land here.
